SmartPaw.PRO - An In-House EdTech Product by SP-Lutsk

In-house product
Business archetype
EdTech Flashcard & Spaced Repetition Learning Platform
The scale
A proprietary, in-house learning platform built around flashcards and spaced repetition, designed to help users master any subject through structured, active review.
The objective
Design and build a focused digital learning product that turns study material into flashcards and organizes review around spaced repetition and active recall - and, as the product has evolved, AI-assisted learning tools.
The Challenge
Current State
Learning large amounts of information is often approached through passive reading and unplanned repetition, which can make it difficult to:
- Turn study material into a structured, reviewable format
- Practice active recall instead of just re-reading notes
- Revisit information consistently over time
SmartPaw was built to make a more structured, active approach to learning easier to access through a simple digital product.
“Pain” Point
01
Study material is often left unstructured, making it harder to review consistently
02
Passive reading is a common default, even though active recall supports better retention
03
Without a repeatable review workflow, previously learned material is easy to forget
Hidden Risks
- Inconsistent review makes long-term retention harder to sustain
- Without spaced repetition, review effort is not focused on the material that needs it most
- A lack of structure can make studying feel harder to stick with over time
Constraints & Risks
Product Constraints
- Flashcard creation and organization needed to stay simple enough for everyday study use
- Spaced repetition scheduling needed to focus review sessions on the material a learner actually needs to revisit
- The learning experience needed to work across different subjects and types of material
Design Risks
- Overcomplicating the product could undermine the simplicity that makes consistent study habits achievable
- The product needed to stay focused on core learning mechanics rather than expanding scope prematurely
Decision & Trade-offs
01. The Core Decision
SP-Lutsk designed and built SmartPaw as an in-house product centered on three core mechanics:
- Flashcard creation and organization for structuring learning material
- Active recall as the primary mode of studying, rather than passive review
- Spaced repetition to organize when material is reviewed
The product gives users a focused digital environment for studying any subject through structured, repeated practice.
02. The Trade-offs
The team prioritized getting the core flashcard, active recall, and spaced repetition workflow right over adding a broader feature set early on. As an in-house product, SmartPaw could be built and evolved iteratively, without the fixed scope of a client engagement.
03. Why Build This In-House?
Building SmartPaw in-house let SP-Lutsk apply its own product engineering and EdTech design judgment directly, and take a digital product from concept to implementation end to end:
- Defining the product concept and core learning workflow
- Designing the user experience around flashcards and structured review
- Developing and launching the platform as a standalone product
That end-to-end ownership - concept, design, and implementation - is different from client work, where scope and requirements are typically defined upfront by someone else.
What the platform does
Core Capabilities
01
Flashcard Creation & Organization
Users create and organize flashcards to turn study material into a structured, reviewable format.
02
Multiple Study Modes
Learners can review material through Flashcards, test themselves with Quiz mode, or use Write mode to practice exact recall.
03
Spaced Repetition Workflows
Review sessions are organized around spaced repetition, revisiting material over time rather than all at once.
04
Learning Paths
Related material can be grouped into learning paths, helping learners track progress through a structured, multi-step study plan.
05
Community & Public Decks
Learners can explore and study public decks created by the community, covering a wide range of subjects and topics.
06
Mobile Apps
SmartPaw is also available as a native app on iOS and Android, alongside the web platform.
User Value
What SmartPaw provides for learners.
Learning Experience
- Study material is organized into structured, reviewable flashcards
- Learners can review material through multiple study modes, including Flashcards, Quiz, and Write
- Review sessions are organized around spaced repetition rather than random repetition
- Community-created public decks give learners more material to study beyond their own flashcards
Product Value
- Helps users build more consistent learning habits
- Supports long-term knowledge retention through structured review, including learning paths that track progress across related material
- Available as a free Student plan, with an optional paid Scholar plan unlocking additional study modes and higher usage limits
- Demonstrates SP-Lutsk's ability to take a product from concept to implementation end to end, including its own iOS and Android apps
Key Notes
Lessons Learned
What we learned building our own product.
Building for ourselves changes the calculus: without a client's fixed scope, we could prioritize getting the core learning loop right before considering any additional features.
Simplicity is a feature in learning products: keeping flashcard creation and review straightforward mattered more than adding extra functionality.
Product ownership end to end is a different discipline than client delivery: defining the concept ourselves, not just implementing someone else's spec, is a distinct capability we wanted to exercise and demonstrate.
In-house product
Built by SP-Lutsk, not for a client
SmartPaw is a proprietary, in-house product developed by SP-Lutsk - not a client project. It's a working example of our end-to-end product development capability: identifying a product opportunity, defining the concept, designing the learning experience, and building and launching the platform ourselves.
“Master any subject with flashcards and spaced repetition.”
